It has been a pleasure working with Mike Todai during his time with Health Management Associates. Mike is a dedicated and conscientious colleague who is always focused on quality care and effective results. Mike was instrumental in implementing IPPS 1599F within all 14 hospitals in our Division. He conducted numerous on-site evaluations, audits, and educational sessions allowing for a 92% divisional success rate in just seven weeks. Mike worked at Erlanger Health System, Chattanooga, TN from 2002 to 2004 and was brought to create a legitimate case management department from what was then essentially a group of social workers and discharge planners. He was responsible for Utilization Review, Case Management, and Discharge Plan. Mike immediately added credibility to the department and quality staff. The numbers he produced during his time were superb. We had saved over 12,000 patient days and nearly 4 million dollars. Cost per admission was below budget and we essentially eliminated denials. Most importantly, we enjoyed a substantial decrease in denial rate as well. Through the series task forces we participated on, Mike was instrumental in reducing our ED diversion rate from nearly 20% to 3-5% as well.
Mike is a very likable guy who is slow to anger and patient with his colleagues. His style is to teach those around him so his core knowledge base is very strong. I believe he has done well in his career for a reason and would recommend him if you are looking for a high energy, competent and affable leader with a track record of success. Saved 12,211 bed days and $3.6 million. 18% increase in admission. Expenses below budget. Denial Rate decreased from 6.0% to 0.55%. Saved $400,000 per year without increasing staff. 55% of cases discharged before expected LOS. Reduced ED diversion from 17% to 3 to 5% range. Lower LOS, denial rate and fiscal management saved $1.1 million per year by refinancing long term bonds.

Mike is a rare individual in today’s health care community. He is extremely knowledgeable, goal and detail oriented. He does not drop the ball. Mike is a result oriented individual and knew what he wanted to accomplish when he came to Brazosport, he worked towards a common goal for his department and the Hospital. His focus was precise and his energy everlasting. The Utilization Review – Case Management Department wanted to track certain indicators in an efficient and timely manner so he produced results in a matter of months. Mike was an outstanding, successful Director of Utilization Review and Resource Management. He has the ability to vision, analyze, develop processes, and successfully implement to the benefit of the organization. Contributing to his success is his ability to work with people – he works well with is direct reports as well as with physicians, other managers and staffs within the organization, and administration. In working with me, I always appreciated Mike’s excellence in performance and his communication to me – he always kept me informed of the good, the bad and the anticipated issues. Mike was employed in senior management at Erlanger Health System as the Director of Case Management. Under Mike’s direction, Case Management was restructured to Care Management which at the time had greater fit with current terminology; form, with clear definition of roles; and function, providing care managers with specific assignment areas, weekend coverage, and team leader oversight. I was really concerned when I heard that my hospital had hired another consultant. I had experienced 4 other consultants in the 9 years I worked here, and they all did the same thing. So when I was told that another consultant would be coming to see what we do, I thought here we go again. We were already working shorthanded. But Mike was different he came up to the floor I was working on he took time to talk with me and to see what I do, he also asked all of us how we think Case Management should be. He then took the majority vote and taught us how to make things work more efficiently. He also noticed that we were working short and used the numbers to show this to administration. He explained interquale and how to us the book, which was something that never was really explained to us. He was always available when I had a question and he would come right up to my floor to show and explain things to me. He was really hands on and did not just talk with administration he worked with the Case Managers.

Mike Todai is a consummate professional. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike several years ago when I was Vice President of the Revenue Cycle in a hospital system in central Florida. I had recently been given the responsibility of the Case Management Departments and there was no Director at one of the facilities. I engaged Mike and his company – Hospital Case Management – to come in and provide leadership and direction to the team. His focus was also on providing the physicians with data to help them understand that changes were needed. Mike came on site, developed a rapport with key physicians including those who were non-compliant in the past, and began data mining. At that time, there was very little data readily available so Mike worked with the IT department to get downloads and preceded to turn data into meaningful information for our organization.
It was through Mike’s efforts with the physicians and Case Managers that one of our facilities improved its outpatient observation to inpatient conversion rate from 42% up to 58% that increased revenues without any additional expenses by over a million dollars.

Mike also assisted me in finding a suitable Director candidate and helped orient her to her new role. During this engagement he also provided basic education to the existing Case Managers and helped clarify and differentiate the roles between the discharge planners, the Case Managers and the Social Workers.

A few years later, I was again without a Director of Case Management and Mike came back to fill that role. Once again, he renewed his relationship with the physicians and staff and worked on site to improve processes and outcomes. During this time, LOS decreased back to budgeted days. Mike consistently demonstrates tremendous knowledge, enthusiasm, and flexibility. He is extremely committed to improving both processes and outcomes and will do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Mike has the ability to communicate with physicians of all specialties. He understands how physicians think and what motivates them to change behaviors and align themselves with hospital goals and strategies. This is his most valuable strength to organizations that are struggling to manage non-employed physicians.”
